Tower Study

Research project for a multi-use high rise buliding in Europe

Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago and Stuttgart University, 1994-1995

The project looked at the possibilities for a very slender 360m high tower housing multiple functions (offices and hotel), meeting European daylight standards and yet creating an elegant and efficient structure. A steel superstructure, extending beyond the building's perimeter, was employed to provide structural and visual coherence and to achieve the required stability. William Baker from SOM's Chicago office oversaw the development of the structural frame and carried out detailed calculations to prove the project's feasibility. Professors Myron Goldsmith, David Sharpe, Werner Sobek and Peter C. von Seidlein provided further architectural and structural guidance.
